I started taking iPhone pictures in 2008 which ultimately led to a rewarding creative journey over the past decade. In 2013, I created a small book, Found, to summarize my experience, learn from my experiments, and share the zaniness and joy of creating images with my iPhone. Little did I understand at the time, but I finished the book at the same time my body was undergoing significant physical change and a forthcoming period of darkness and pain. During that time,

30 years later and I still remember an exchange I had with a student in a professional workshop at the Rochester Institute of Technology focused on digital photography. The student worked at a national trade magazine and I remember telling her that she needed to play with the tools to learn. Those were the days of Adobe Photoshop Version 1 and we were all experimenting and pushing all the tools to their limits. The student shot me a look
…I generally shy away from discussing my focus stacking technique as I feel that the images should stand on their own without understanding the magic that goes into creating them. There is nothing secretive about the approach and I’d like there to be more artistic exploration of the close-up world beyond the often beautifully captured pictures of plants and insects by practitioners of the technique. I described the approach last year in a post titled, Finding Inspiration in a
…Two of my favorite images have been selected to be included in the Rehoboth Art League’s 4th Annual Juried Photography Exhibition. The first image, Iron Age Tools #2, is a detail of a tool used by the late Bill Gichner, who was a well known blacksmith from Iron Age Antiques. The second image, Camellia, is one of the first flower images I created. This was an experimental image that included multiple computational techniques to deliver a painterly effect.
…Codd-Neck Bottles were invented by Hiram Codd in 1872 for the purpose of bottling carbonated drinks. These bottles enclose a marble and rubber gasket and were filled upside down. I picked up one of these bottles at a local sea glass festival during the summer and started shooting abstract details. I became intrigued

Here is my artist statement for the exhibit:
Art has played a transformative role in healing, exploring what is close and accessible, while helping quiet pain and frustration. In addition, practicing mindfulness has enabled focusing through the fog, satisfaction of observation,
…In the winter of 2015, a few months after buying a professional Sony camera, I purchased a macro lens and set out to learn macro photography and focus stacking. I began with a crumpled-up metal artifact I found at the construction site of the old Indian River Inlet Bridge (formally known as the Charles W. Cullen Bridge). I was fascinated with the folds, texture and color. My friend, Sam Ellis, invited me to photograph it in his studio.
…I’m pleased to announce that I’ll be presenting to the members of the Coastal Camera Club and the Delmarva photography community on April 28th, 2018. I’ll be talking about my work, the creative process and encouraging the audience to find their own creative journey. Please register and join us if you are in
…Pain became my profession over the last 5 years, impacting every aspect of my life as I sought answers and clawed my way back. It was a major reason that I found my way back to photography. As most of my friends and colleagues know, I have a highly analytic and creative mind. Pain would cancel out my ability to think, process, write, and work. This was uniquely cruel and unbelievably frustrating. Photography played an important role in my healing
